Digitalisation in Swiss schools has stabilised at a high level, while the use of artificial intelligence (AI) has increased sharply since 2024. This is shown by the fifth survey of the “Monitoring of digitalisation in education from the perspective of pupils and students”, presented in Staff Paper 28. Since 2020, this representative survey has systematically recorded the availability and use of digital applications among pupils and students in compulsory and upper secondary education in Switzerland. The monitoring thus provides the only representative data covering 8- to 18-year-olds and allowing developments in the digitalisation of Swiss schools to be tracked over six years.
The surge in digitalisation driven by the pandemic has come to an end. Differences between language regions remain substantial. At primary level, however, the use of digital technologies at school and at home is declining, including the use of social media.
For the second time, the survey also covered the use of AI applications such as ChatGPT, making it possible for the first time to compare the results from 2024 and 2026. The use of AI at school and at home for school-related purposes has increased sharply; in the classroom, it is also frequently used without guidance from teachers.
The monitoring is funded by the Swiss Conference of Cantonal Ministers of Education (EDK) and the State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI) as part of Swiss education monitoring.
