The study analyses the effects of a change of canton on the academic achievement of Swiss students at lower secondary level. Using representative data on the educational trajectory and academic achievement data at the end of compulsory schooling, the individual differences in performance caused by a change of school to another canton are estimated. Although the overall effect is surprisingly small and not statistically significant, there is a significant but also small negative effect for boys. However, these effects decrease rapidly one year after the change.
