Does the transition from school to work differ depending on whether the training is firm-based or school-based? To answer this question, a new study by Samuel Lüthi of the Swiss Leading House VPET-ECON compares the trajectories of graduates of dual VET programmes with those of school-based VET programmes. The results show that the latter are more likely to start tertiary education, while dual VET is more effective for a seamless transition into working life, especially for men and in occupations with comparatively high unemployment rates. Firm-based learning is also particularly effective for less motivated individuals and thus appears to be effective for the development of noncognitive skills.
